Thu Adult Pottery Studio, 20:00 – 22:00 | 16 Jan – 02 Apr

In brief…

This is an 11 week long pottery course for adult learners, covering both hand building and throwing, in the Spring Term 2020. It runs from Thursday 16th January through to Thursday 2nd April 2020 inclusive, with a break on Thursday 20th February for half term. Each class is 2 hours long, from 8pm till 10pm.

Suitable for you?

The Thursday Adult Pottery Studio course is open to anybody who wants to learn either basic skills or build on their previous experience. This flexible approach allows the teachers to respond to the requirements and enthusiasm of learners who may want to explore a variety of specialist techniques. At the same time we offer a structured curriculum for those with no previous experience to make sure a good foundation is set for the technical and aesthetic aspects of working with clay as a creative medium.

Course description

This course will cover hand building techniques, with opportunity to work on the potter’s wheel as well. Techniques taught include slab building, pinching, coiling, press moulding and throwing. We will also cover a variety of decorating techniques which include working with slips and glazes; including sgraffito, inlay, stamping, mono printing, slip trailing, wax resist and bubble glazing (!).

The course will lead you through a progression of short projects, each of which will introduce you to basic hand building and throwing techniques, culminating in the opportunity to complete an independent project. The techniques covered will be built upon week by week, with the aim of giving you the skill set necessary to confidently create work in clay and to give expression to your ideas.

Experienced learners joining the course are welcome to work on individual projects from the beginning and we are happy to support you in discovering and exploring new materials as well as developing and perfecting techniques to realise your projects.

The course also includes a technical component to help you gain a deeper understanding of the materials you are working with and the ceramic processes involved. Each class opens with a short demonstration aimed to provide you with some basic technical background knowledge, which will help you to understand how and why clay and glazes behave the way they do and how to best handle them to achieve the results you desire.

You will learn in a friendly and professional environment, in a beautiful secluded ground floor garden pottery and art studio, right in the heart of Shepherd’s Bush in West London. The teachers at Kite Studios are highly experienced and passionate, will guide you through the processes and be on hand at all times to answer questions.

The Thursday Evening Pottery course is a wonderful way to unwind after a busy day, while also learning a new skill and giving expression to your creativity. We have free after hours on street parking, excellent public transport links and offer flexible attendance options.

Included in the price

The fee for this course covers tuition and all materials. Shared tools, aprons and towels are provided. It does not include firing fees (please see below for details). We encourage everyone to practice, experiment, learn and enjoy!

Firing fees

There is a charge for firing, which is additional to the course cost. This helps us to keep the per class cost down. This system gives you the freedom to practice and experiment as much as you like, before you decide which pieces you want to keep, whilst also doing our bit for the environment! The charge is £1 per 100g of weight of your finished work. This price includes both the bisque and the glaze firings. Our firing fees are not for profit. The work is weighed before the first firing. Firing fees can be paid at your class by cash or card. You can pay as you go or choose to pay at the end of each half term.

Try one class

If you would like to try one class before you decide if you would like to commit to the whole term, we offer a self contained trial class in the week before the course commences.

Flexible attendance options

At Kite Studios we realise that an 11 week term is a lengthy commitment, often not possible for anyone with a busy career schedule, shiftwork or childcare needs. Therefore, as a courtesy, we offer a flexible attendance schedule. You can attend a two hour class in any of our other Adult Pottery Studio courses or a 2 hour independent pottery session as a replacement (free of charge) for the class you missed. If you would like to attend a 2.5 hour class, we simply ask for you to pay the small price difference in the single class price.

Who teaches the course
