Kite Studios will be opening for adult printmaking classes from 8th June 2021. But for this next half term, we are offering another course of five one hour online classes with experienced Kite Studios Printmaking tutor, Sally Grumbridge.

This is a friendly class suitable for beginners and those with basic printmaking skills.

The aim of the course is to encourage and enable those participating to start or continue making prints at home without a press and complicated studio equipment. And most importantly, to have fun with printmaking.

This half term will be developing relief printing using different materials from lino and card, fabric, organic materials and even the inside of Tetra Pak containers; using stencils, different relief surfaces and monotype.  We shall also make a printmaking dolly which can be used instead of a roller. Work will be loosely based around a theme and in addition to working on your own prints, we shall take inspiration from other artists and look at basic elements of art theory.

You do not need any specialist materials, you could start with paper and a tube of relief printing ink or even acrylic paint, plus bits and pieces found in your house or garden.

Recommended basic materials for relief printing:
pencil, ruler, card, scissors, coloured tissue paper, glue stick or PVA
cartridge or printing paper
water based or water washable relief ink(s)*
wooden spoon, rolling pin or baren* for pulling the prints by hand
smooth hard washable surface for inking up (eg glass, acetate, flat plastic tray, formica)
newspaper, old paper scraps, rags for cleaning up
spray bottle with washing up liquid and water (50/50) for cleaning up

And for linocuts, you will also need
soft roller*
basic lino cutting tools*
Lino or soft cut carving blocks*

For a printmaking dolly you will need a large pebble or round hard object (the size of an egg), old cotton rags, one approximately 40 x 40 cms square, string

*simple lino printing sets are available for purchase from most online art suppliers.
