Mon Adult Pottery Studio (Trial Class) 10:30 – 12:30

From: £30.00

In brief

This is a two hour long, one-off trial class for the Monday morning Adult Pottery Studio in the Spring Term 2020. A trial class is seen as an introduction to the content that will be covered in the course over the term. It enables you to try one class in a course before you decide if you would like to commit to the rest of the term.

Only one trial class in this course is available per person per term. You can take a trial class at any point in the term, except in the final week of the course. This course can also be attended on a drop in basis.

Suitable for you?

This class is suitable for adult learners; for beginners as well as those with experience in pottery and ceramics.

Times and Duration

This class is two hours long and runs on Monday mornings from 10:30am to 12:30pm. The Monday Adult Pottery Studio course runs during term time for a duration of 10 to 13 weeks, depending on the length of the school term. There is a one week break at half term. The schedule can be found on our Term Timetable (please see Term Time & Holidays link above).

Course Description

Whether you are looking for a way to express your creativity, a relaxing passtime and opportunity to make functional or sculptural objects for your home or to give as gifts, come and join us! We also cater to anyone looking for professional development, experienced workers in the art and design industry wanting to explore clay as a medium and experienced ceramic artists.

You will learn in a friendly and professional environment, in a beautiful secluded ground floor garden pottery and art studio, right in the heart of Shepherd’s Bush in West London. The teachers at Kite Studios are highly experienced and passionate, will guide you through the processes and be on hand at all times to answer questions.

The Adult Pottery Studio course offers a flexible approach which allows the teachers to respond to the requirements and enthusiasm of learners who may want to explore a variety of specialist techniques. At the same time we offer a structured curriculum for those with no previous experience to make sure a good foundation is set for the technical and aesthetic aspects of working with clay as a creative medium.

The Monday morning Adult Pottery Studio course covers hand building techniques and working on the potter’s wheel. Techniques include slab building, pinching, coiling, press moulding and throwing. We will also explore a variety of decorating techniques which include working with slips and glazes; including sgraffito, inlay, stamping, mono printing, slip trailing, wax resist and glazing.

Follow this link for more details about the course.

The trial class

Beginners attending the trial class can expect to make between two and four small cylinders (cups/beakers) or bowls on the pottery wheel or a few small hand built objects such as pinch pots, small bowls, a slab built cup or a few tiles or trays, or a small sculpture. You are also welcome to propose short projects which are of interest to you. This is a very flexible class format and we are happy to accommodate you.

Working on the pottery wheel is a skill which it takes time for most people to learn, if you have had no prior experience. The main thing is to enjoy the process and the feel of the clay and to enliven your imagination and your life with a new experience!

Experienced learners are welcome to work on individual projects from the beginning and we are happy to support you in discovering and exploring new materials as well as developing and perfecting techniques to realise your projects. We are also happy to suggest a number of short projects which you could complete within the time alloted for the single class.

Practicing the art of pottery is a wonderful way to unwind, while also learning a new skill and giving expression to your creativity.

We have excellent public transport links and all courses offer flexible attendance options for anyone with busy career schedules, shift work or childcare needs.

Included in the price

The fee for this one-off trial class includes tuition and all materials. Shared tools, aprons and towels are provided. It does not include firing fees (please see pricing below). We encourage everyone to practice, experiment, learn and enjoy!

Firing fees

If at the end of this class, you decide to join us for the rest of the course, please note that there is a charge for firing, (additional to the course fee). This system gives you the freedom to practice and experiment before you decide which pieces you would like to keep, whilst also doing our bit for the environment! The charge is £1 per 100g of weight of your finished work. This price includes both the bisque and the glaze firings. Our firing fees are not for profit. The work is weighed before the first firing. Firing fees can be paid at your class by cash or card.

The nature of clay

When booking this class please be aware, that working with clay is a multi-step process, often requiring two or three sessions to bring your work to completion. If you unable to commit to the whole Monday morning course, you may therefore need to attend this course on a drop in basis or one of the Pottery Studio drop in classes on Fridays (mornings or evenings) and/or a Pottery Glaze and Fire session to complete your work.  As an alternative, we also offer all inclusive bespoke packages, such as our Throw a Pot and Slip Decorate private workshop.
